Materials Needed To Secure Casters

The key to a successful installation is ensuring you have the right materials to complete the task. The most important choice is to select the right casters for your needs. You will want to consider the required load-bearing capacity, the type of flooring, and whether the caster will be exposed to moisture, solvents, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

At RWM, we offer a full range of casters and customizable options for the following:

Once you’ve selected your caster, you’ll only need a handful of tools to complete the task, including:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil/marking pen
  • Drill with metal drill bits
  • Appropriately sized screws
  • Table leg hardware (Optional, but this can significantly improve appearance and stability.)
  • Wrench
  • Pliers
  • Goggles
  • Gloves

How To Attach Casters to Metal Furniture, Step by Step

It doesn’t take long to install metal casters to a table leg, but it does require careful attention to detail during each step of the process.

  • Measure and mark the holes: Measure the width/length of the table leg. For optimal stability, position the casters near the corner of the table. Once measured, mark the spots where you will need to drill.

  • Drill holes: Carefully drill pilot holes in the center of each mark. Pilot holes are vital for protecting the metal from splitting, so don’t use a bit the size of the desired hole. Remember to always wear gloves and goggles while doing this to protect against metal shards.

  • Attach and tighten: Align the caster with the pilot hole and use a screwdriver or drill to secure the caster to the table leg.

  • Repeat the process: Repeat the process on the remaining three table legs. When all casters are attached, you should give them a good turn with your wrench or a pair of pliers. This will help prevent wobbling and will facilitate smoother movement.

  • Test: Once all the casters are attached and secured, you will want to test the mobility and stability of the table. If you find any deficiencies, it’s advisable to correct them before putting the table into use.
